Best time to visit Okinawa

Short answer: spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are best: warm, less humid, fewer crowds, cheaper flights than summer. Swim season runs March to October. Summer is hot and typhoon-prone. Avoid Golden Week (early May), Obon (mid-August), New Year, and February if you mind cooler water.

Spring (March to May): mild, blooming, good value

Spring is when Okinawa wakes up. Temperatures hover around 20–25°C (68–77°F), water is warm enough for swimming (especially April and May), and the island is in flower. Crowds are lighter than summer; hotel rates are moderate. Early March can still be cool, so wait until mid-March if you want reliable beach days. Golden Week (late April to early May) brings domestic Japanese holidays and crowds, but booking a tour a week ahead usually still works. Spring is ideal for the Kerama Islands snorkeling, the Blue Cave, and north-Okinawa sightseeing.

Summer (June to August): hot, typhoon-prone, peak prices

Okinawa summers are hot (28–31°C / 82–88°F) and humid. The Pacific typhoon season peaks July to September, bringing rain, wind and occasional tour cancellations. Hotels and tours hit peak prices. Avoid mid-August (Obon school holidays) when the whole of Japan seems to travel at once. If you must visit in summer, book tours a week or two in advance and plan weekdays, not weekends. The water is warmest (26–28°C / 79–82°F), which means great for diving and snorkeling, but you trade that for crowds and weather risk.

Autumn (September to November): calmer, cheaper, still warm

Early autumn (September) still carries some typhoon risk, but by mid-September conditions settle. October is often perfect: warm (22–26°C / 72–79°F), fewer tourists, lower prices, and calm seas for the boat tours. The islands are still green; the light is golden. Water is still swimmable (23–25°C / 73–77°F). November can be cooler and wetter, but still pleasant. Autumn is the insider’s choice for an Okinawa trip.

Winter (December to February): cool, quiet, diving season

Winter sees fewer tourists and low airfares (January especially). Temperatures drop to 15–20°C (59–68°F). The water cools to about 20°C (68°F), which rules out casual swimming but is still fine for wetsuits and diving. The tours on offer shift: Kerama snorkeling slows, but diving remains good, and the north (Churaumi Aquarium) and history (Shuri Castle) tours run year-round. Occasional rain or wind can cancel tours, but clear days are sunny and pleasant. Book ahead if winter weather appeals to you.

Insider tip

October is underrated. Most tourists miss it because they think Okinawa is only a summer destination. In reality, October has the calmest seas, warmest prices, and the best light for photographs.
