Can you swim in Okinawa year-round?

Short answer: swim season is March to October. Casual beach swimming is fine then; winter (December–February) is cool (~20°C / 68°F) and windy, but diving and wetsuit snorkeling work year-round. Jellyfish nets protect some beaches mid-summer.

March to October is the swim season. Water temperature ranges from 22°C (72°F) in March to 28°C (82°F) in July–August. Most swimmers are comfortable in this range; tour operators provide wetsuits on request.

November to February is off-season for casual beach swimming. Water cools to 15–20°C (59–68°F). It’s still swimmable with a 5mm wetsuit (divers do it regularly), but casual tourists find it too cold. Diving is excellent year-round because of the thermal protection.

Jellyfish nets appear on popular beaches (like Sunset Beach in Chatan) mid-June through mid-September. They’re installed because of box jellyfish, especially in July–August. Guided tour operators manage this; you won’t encounter jellyfish on a private Kerama or Blue Cave snorkel.

Best months for swimming

April–May and September–October. Water is warm (22–25°C / 72–77°F), typhoon risk is low, and crowds are lighter than July–August.
