How many days in Okinawa do you need?
The 3-day itinerary: Naha, Kerama, north
Day 1: Naha city and Shuri Castle (walkable, no tour needed). Land, collect luggage, check into hotel (most are within walking distance of Yui monorail or Kokusai-dori). Spend the afternoon walking International Street (Kokusai-dori): shops, restaurants, bookstores. Take the monorail to Shuri station, walk the Shuri Castle grounds (main hall is under reconstruction; the grounds and gates remain open, and the story is powerful). Visit the Tamaudun royal mausoleum nearby. Dinner in Naha: goya champuru or Okinawa soba. Jet lag hits; early night.
Day 2: Kerama Islands snorkeling day ($49 tour). Hotel pickup 8 AM from central Naha. 50-minute boat to the Kerama Islands. Three snorkel stops in Kerama Blue water; guides in the water. Turtles commonly seen. Bento lunch and jasmine tea on board. Return by late afternoon. Dinner and recovery; you’re tired and salty. See the snorkeling guide and Kerama Islands guide.
Day 3: Churaumi Aquarium OR Blue Cave. Option A: North Okinawa Sightseeing Tour ($49, full-day coach). Hotel pickup, drive north past Cape Manzamo, stop at a pineapple farm, spend 2 hours at Churaumi Aquarium (Ocean Expo Park) seeing whale sharks and manta rays. Return late afternoon. Option B: Blue Cave private snorkeling tour ($55, half-day). Hotel pickup from the west coast around 9 AM or 1 PM. Half-day snorkeling in the glowing blue cave. Photographer Hiro takes photos. Return by early/mid afternoon. See the Churaumi guide and snorkeling guide.
Fly out Day 4 morning (early flights are common from Naha). Three full days on island; feasible but leaves no margin for rest or weather delays.
The 4–5 day itinerary: Naha, two tours, plus local time
Day 1: Naha and Shuri Castle (as above).
Day 2: Kerama snorkeling tour ($49) (as above).
Day 3: Churaumi Aquarium ($49) or Blue Cave ($55) (as above).
Day 4: "Buffer day." Sleep in, walk Kokusai-dori, explore a museum (Okinawa Prefectural Museum, Churaumi satellite museum in Naha), visit a local market (Makishi Public Market, busy with Okinawan food and tourists). Book a second tour if the mood strikes: intro-dive in the Keramas ($68) for a different angle. Or book the Shuri Castle walking tour ($68) for a guided, deep-dive into Ryukyu history and WWII sites. Dinner at a local izakaya.
Day 5: Leisurely morning. Monorail to Cape Maeda (clifftop views). Visit a local distillery (Awamori Museum). Pack. Fly out Day 6 morning or stay another night if flights allow.
The 5–7 day itinerary: all the above plus island-hopping
If you have a full week, add an island day:
Hirara (Miyako Island): Ferry from Naha (50 minutes, ~$30 round-trip). A separate island with its own snorkeling and diving tours. Beaches at Maehama and Nakadomari. You can day-trip or stay a night.
Ishigaki Island: Ferry from Naha (70 minutes, ~$40 round-trip). Larger island with excellent diving, Kabira Bay (tour boats), Kamakura Beach. Popular with divers. Day-trip or 1–2 night stay.
Or use the extra days for a second Keramas trip (diving instead of snorkeling, for instance), or slow time: spa visits, better restaurants, a sunset tour, reading on a beach.
Three days is minimum to feel like you’ve been to Okinawa; four to five days lets you breathe and try two major tours. Seven days starts to feel like you’re repeating yourself on the main island, so island-hop or relax.
